Alexia Moreno and Mercedes Leon Named Second Team All-Southern Conference
Broward College women’s softball players Alexia Moreno and Mercedes Leon were named second team All-Southern Conference. Moreno is from Hollywood and graduated from McArthur High School. Leon is from Pembroke Pines and a graduate of Charles W. Flanagan High School.
Moreno started 42 of 43 games played and led the Seahawks in at bats (129), runs batted in (12) and total bases (41). The freshman played third base for the Seahawks, finishing second on the team in putouts (43) and assists (99).
Leon also started 42 of 43 games played and topped the team in total plate appearances (131), batting average (.333), on base percentage (.395), hits (39) and runs scored (14). Defensively, the freshman shortstop led the Seahawks in putouts (50) and assists (113).
The selections of Moreno and Leon bring a total of three all-conference players during the two-year tenure of head coach Jenna Lopez. Last year, Cortnie Hagan was named second team all-conference.

NJCAA WOMEN’S TENNIS NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS (May 6-10)
Tyler Junior College – Tyler, Texas
Broward College Falls In Flight 2 Doubles Finals
Seahawks Finish Fifth Overall
The Broward College women’s tennis team will never forget the experience of playing in the NJCAA national championships, and the Seahawks doubles tandem of Stephanie Cardullo and Ali Underhill will never forget Ann Porry or Lai Wei from State College of Florida after losing the Flight 2 doubles championship 6-3, 7-6(3) at Tyler, Texas. Cardullo/Underhill entered the match as the No. 4 seed and faced Porry/Wei for the fourth time this season, but the No. 3 seed team from Bradenton won three of those matches (two during the regular season and the national championship).
On April 14 at the FCSAA State Tournament Championship in Tampa, Cardullo/Underhill defeated Porry/Wei 9-8 to win the No. 2 doubles title. Twenty-six days later, at a location exceeding 1,000 miles from the previous meeting, in a flight bracket that included 29 doubles teams representing 14 states, and after the completion of 27 matches, the paths of Cardullo/Underhill and Porry/Wei would meet again in the finals round. Cardullo/Underhill won the previous four matches in Flight 2 doubles and the duo were riding a nine-match winning streak dating back to March 30, but the streak and hopes for a national title ended on May 10 for the two sophomores.
Broward College finished fifth out of 29 teams in the national tournament with 31 points. In singles, Justyna Wojcik advanced to the round of 16, Paula Garcia and Viviana Hostios reached the quarterfinals round, and Cardullo, Underhill and Ana Llera advanced to semifinals round. In doubles, the Flight 3 team of Amanda Angulo and Paula Garcia reached the semifinals round.
The fifth place finish is a remarkable achievement for a team making the first appearance in the NJCAA tournament since 2007, and a program that was in full rebuilding mode during the first year of head coach Marlena Hall’s tenure (2009-10). Under her tutelage, the 2011-12 Seahawks returned to national prominence, achieved a top 10 NJCAA ranking (seventh as of April 16) and won a state championship in No. 2 doubles. With four players returning next year in Angulo, Garcia, Hostios and Llera, the 2012-13 season looks to be just as promising.

For Underhill, Broward’s No.4 singles player, it was her second upset victory in as many days. She topped Kelsey Reblin, of Collin College, 6-1, 7-6(3). Reblin was the flight’s fourth seed.
Broward’s No.2 player, Cardullo, of Coral Springs, the seventh seed, easily knocked off hard-hitting fifth seed Zsofia Bird, of Cowley College, 6-3, 6-3.
