Broward College Announces New Visual Arts and Design Academy

Broward College launched its new Visual Arts and Design Academy (VA&DA), located on the A. Hugh Adams Central Campus, 3501 SW Davie Road, Davie. Slated to begin in August, the VA&DA is the first of its kind in Broward County. This intense, highly selective and competitive program only admits 30 students a year.

"Broward College created this program to offer an intense learning experience to our students", said Scott Miller, associate dean of Broward College's Visual & Performing Arts Department. "This program will not only guide students on the process of making art, but it will also encourage them to analyze the content of their artistic creations, which will give them the knowledge, confidence and skills they need to move on to any prestigious art program to further their education."

Although the program is open to all students pursuing an associate of arts degree in visual arts, unlike the traditional enrollment process for Broward College students, applicants to the VA&DA are required to submit a portfolio of 15-20 recent visual works of art, along with a written artist statement, which will be reviewed and determined for final acceptance by Broward College senior art faculty jurors. If students are admitted, they will then be placed into small groups of 15 students to foster a collaborative and creative atmosphere, where they will be closely guided by professors. At the end of every year, students must resubmit their portfolios to prove their progression and remain in the program.
