Cuban-American drummer will also narrate his unique video project Afro-Cuban Jazz and Beyond
Davie, Fla. (May 3, 2018) – Led by the legendary Cuban-American drummer Ignacio Berroa will perform with his trio following his narrated educational video presentation, Afro-Cuban Jazz and Beyond, as part of the "South Florida JAZZ at Bailey Hall" series on Saturday, May 19 at 7:30 p.m.
A great Afro-Cuban drummer, Berroa has worked with a who's who of Latin and American artists including Chick Corea, Wynton Marsalis, Freddie Hubbard, Michael Brecker, Jaco Pastorius, and Gonzalo Rubalcaba, among numerous others. He began his musical education at age 11, ultimately studying at Cuba's National Conservatory. The 1980 Mariel boatlift transported him to New York City where he was soon introduced to Dizzy Gillespie and spent the next 10 years as the trumpet legend's drummer.
Gillespie best defined Berroa as: "… the only Latin drummer in the world, in the history of American music, that intimately knows both worlds: his native Afro-Cuban music as well as Jazz…"
Berroa's latest release is Straight Ahead From Havana, which All About Jazz reviewed reporting, "Ignacio Berroa has re-imagined the popular songbook of his homeland, into Straight Ahead From Havana, shaking up established traditional elements to form a new jazz perspective."
As part of the concert, Berroa will narrate his video presentation Afro-Cuban Jazz and Beyond, which traces the reciprocal development of Afro-Cuban music and Cuban music and jazz.
