2019 Broward College Speaker Series Features Dynamic Line-Up

Fort Lauderdale, FL (October 17, 2018) – Broward College is excited to announce a dynamic schedule of speakers for its 2019 Speaker Series to be held at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. Keeping in line with the Broward College Speaker Series mission, the series now in its sixth year features notable speakers that educate, enlighten and entertain the community on a variety of topics. Kicking off the series on January 16 is a longtime columnist for The Wall Street Journal, Barrons and The New York Times, Ben Stein. The series will continue with Academy Award-winning Actress and Activist Marlee Matlin on February 6 and Sports Analyst and Broadcaster Terry Bradshaw on March 11. Closing the Broward College Speaker Series on April 24 will be Award-winning Actor and Bestselling Author, Hill Harper.

"Our commitment to education expands beyond the classroom, as the College plays a key role in fostering social and cultural dialogue within the community," said Broward College President Gregory Haile. "The Speaker Series connects our community with national thought leaders, trend-setters, and history-makers shaping social change."

The speakers will share their exciting experiences, insights, points of view and behind the scenes stories on some of the most current topics of the day. February 6, 2019 | Marlee Matlin - Academy Award-Winning Actress and Activist

Topic: Nobody's Perfect: Achieving Inclusion, Diversity, and Access

Marlee Matlin received worldwide critical acclaim for her film debut in Paramount Pictures' Children of a Lesser God, for which she received the Academy Award for Best Actress. At 21, she became the youngest recipient of the Best Actress Oscar and only one of four actresses to receive the honor for her film debut. In addition to the Oscar, Matlin received the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Drama. Though Matlin lost her hearing when she was only 18 months old, she never let her challenges dictate her future or deter her dreams. Along with a successful Hollywood career, Matlin has dedicated herself to raising awareness for many humanitarian causes, including diversity and LGBT rights. She is a staunch advocate for children and a champion for those struggling against domestic abuse and addiction (battles she knows well). Matlin has also helped raise awareness for better hearing health for millions of deaf and hard of hearing children and adults in developing countries. Harper is a humanitarian, actor, author, entrepreneur, health and wellness ambassador/educator and philanthropist.
