Broward College Gives Back to the Community with $200,000 in Grants to Support MLK Day of Service Events

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL (November 29, 2018) – Broward College will award more than $200,000 to 47 community organizations participating in its 2019 MLK Day of Service, with projects ranging from education initiatives to support for veterans. The MLK Day of Service encourages the public to honor the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr by participating in a day of volunteerism.

Now in its fifth year, the College's MLK Day of Service program received 106 applications for project funding, a 47 percent increase from 2018.

"We are so proud that our program continues to grow year over year, and that it is spurring new and innovative ways to serve the social, educational and environmental needs of the county," said Broward College President Gregory Haile. "Three of the projects awarded were initiated by Broward College faculty, demonstrating that our commitment to fostering a culture of volunteerism among our students, staff, and faculty. This grant program is part of our holistic approach to supporting the development of the community at all levels."

In addition to the education and veteran's initiatives, the 2019 service projects will focus on support for neighborhood improvement projects, the environment, health promotion, disaster preparedness, and public safety. All service projects must culminate on Monday, January 21, 2019.

Funding for the Broward College MLK Day of Service projects is made possible through the Florida Legislature, in partnership with the MLK Day of Service Advisory Board. Each organization was eligible to receive up to $5,000 for proposed projects.

Since 2015, the Broward College MLK Day of Service has funded 191 service projects. Last year, Broward College MLK Day of Service projects hosted more than 3,000 volunteers who logged more than 13,000 hours of service. The public is invited to participate in one of the volunteer projects by registering on the Broward College MLK Day of Service website.
