Broward College Earns Top Spot in Florida for 2018 State Officer Certification Exam Pass Rate

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL (Jan. 9, 2019) – The Police Academy Basic Training program at Broward College has received a 96 percent pass rate for the 2018 State Officer Certification Exam (SOCE), the highest percentage in the state. Passage of the SOCE is required to become a police officer, sheriff's deputy or corrections officer.

In addition to earning the highest pass rate, Broward College reported a total of 200 students who sat for the exam, the largest total of the institutions with the top five pass rates.

Before sitting the SOCE, students are first required to complete a 770-hour law enforcement basic training academy through the College's Institute of Public Safety (IPS).

We enjoy a strong collaborative partnership with the Broward County Chiefs and the Sheriff," said Dean of IPS Linda Wood, who lauded collaboration with law enforcement on training and curriculum as one of the core strengths of the Broward College program. "We also have a team of experienced and dedicated staff, and together we are making sure that the new generation of law enforcement officers serves their communities with the highest degree of professionalism."

Founded in 1972, the IPS is home to one of the 41 training centers in Florida certified by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the Florida Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission. The multi-million-dollar facility provides students with the opportunity to complete a range of law enforcement academies and degree programs.

"At Broward College, we strive to make sure every law enforcement student is prepared to protect and serve through extensive training, fieldwork and academic support," said President, Gregory Haile. "We are proud of our accomplishments and look forward to fostering the next generation of public servants."
