Broward College Mobile Educational Unit Hits the Road to Increase Higher Education Opportunities for Adult Learners

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL (Jan. 3, 2019) – Interested in going back to school but not sure where to start? A solution may be closer than you think. Broward College is launching a mobile educational unit, equipped with computers and workstations, to travel across Broward County and provide information on postsecondary educational opportunities to residents in underserved communities.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony with Broward College President Gregory Adam Haile, Esq. will take place on Jan. 17 from 9-10 a.m. at the A. Hugh Adams Central Campus in Davie (Building 6, Lobby) to officially welcome the mobile unit to the road.
The vehicle is funded through a $3.9 million TRIO Educational Opportunity Center grant that was awarded to the College in 2016 to assist low-income, first-generation adults with entering or continuing programs of postsecondary education. This investment is significant given that recent workforce projections estimate that nearly 65 percent of all jobs will require postsecondary education and training beyond high school.
Since the 2016-2017 grant year, the project has served over 2,000 participants, with over 83 percent of participants enrolling into postsecondary programs. With the addition of the mobile unit, the TRIO EOC will be able to increase the availability and accessibility of services and serve at least 1,000 participants each year.
The EOC will work with all adults; however, the program targets Broward County residents living in underserved zip codes. It also assists with the removal of personal barriers that make focusing on education a challenge and supports adults with going to any postsecondary educational institution of their choice – whether that be a four-year university, a two-year state college, technical school or apprenticeship program.
The EOC helps prospective students with program identification, college applications, financial aid, major/career guidance, transfer services, and more. Community partners include HANDY, Broward Legal Aid and Urban League of Broward County.
