Broward College Wins IIE Andrew Heiskell Award for International Partnerships

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL (February 19, 2019) – Broward College was the recipient of the IIE Andrew Heiskell Award for Innovation in International Education in the category of International Partnerships. The IIE Heiskell Awards honor outstanding international education initiatives conducted by universities and colleges from among the 1,300 member institutions of the IIE Network.

The awards feature the most cutting-edge models for developing and expanding international education opportunities in the following five categories: Scholars as Drivers of Innovation, Student Mobility, International Partnerships, Access and Equity, and Higher Education in Emergencies.

Broward College received the award under the International Partnerships category in recognition of its initiative 'The Third Way.' This model allows students to stay in their home country and complete an associate degree with Broward College before transferring to a college or university in the U.S. to finish the final two years of their bachelor's degree. Broward College has offered this program since 1979, and it is estimated that more than 8,600 students have transferred with college credits recognized by the receiving institution.

"We are thrilled to be recognized for our commitment to innovation in education," said Broward College President Gregory Adam Haile, Esq. "For more than four decades, Broward College has been a leader in international education, partnering with colleges and universities throughout the world to provide a more accessible way to attract international students."

Currently, Broward College has international centers or academic affiliates in Bolivia, Brazil, China, Ecuador, India, Indonesia, Peru, Spain, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, and Singapore. Some resources generated from these centers and affiliates go towards tuition assistance for Florida residents and scholarships for local Broward County students to participate in study abroad opportunities. The $1,000 prize will also be donated to the College's Study Abroad program.

"International students studying alongside Americans are a tremendous asset to the United States," said Marie Royce, Assistant Secretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs within the U.S. state department. "We need to develop leaders in all fields who can take on our toughest challenges. We need people who can find solutions that keep us secure and make us more prosperous. We want to send a message that international education makes us stronger as a country."

IIE presented the Heiskell Awards at the 2019 IIE Summit in New York City February 17-19. President Haile and Dr. David Moore, Executive Director for International Education at Broward College accepted the award. Dr. Moore also participated in a panel discussion related to the unique international model for which Broward College won this prestigious award.
