City of Tamarac Partners with Broward College

The Expansion of Broward UP™ Continues: Broward College and the City of Tamarac Offer Residents and Employees New Pathways to Success

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (Nov. 14, 2019) – Residents and employees in the City of Tamarac now have access to new ways of furthering their education and career, thanks to a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the City and Broward College. The City of Tamarac is the fifth municipal partner to join Broward UP, a community-centric approach developed by the College to raise education access and attainment levels and to drive social mobility and economic development across Broward County.

The MOU, approved by the City of Tamarac Commission on Wednesday, November 13, will see the College providing direct support in the design and delivery of:

  • Workshops on financial aid, career development and college readiness for residents
  • On-site programs and certifications for city residents and employees
  • Access strategy for the City of Tamarac employees to obtain Broward College degrees
  • Entrepreneurial programming

Broward UP, the UP meaning “unlimited potential,” aims at improving the lives of residents in Broward County zip codes with high unemployment rates and low educational attainment levels. While Broward County’s unemployment rate is approximately 2.8 percent, it soars to more than 10 percent in some cities.  In response to this disparity, Broward UP has adopted three goals: increase college access and attendance; improve degree and certificate attainment, and holistically raise social and economic mobility.

“The City of Tamarac is thrilled to partner with Broward College to offer our residents higher education and entrepreneurial programming opportunities,” said Mayor of Tamarac Michelle J. Gomez, following the signing. “This partnership is an important piece of Tamarac’s overall economic development strategy and will provide our residents with skills training opportunities to grow their businesses and advance their careers.”

“We are excited to have the City of Tamarac as our newest Broward UP municipal partner. These partnerships allow us to mobilize residents to pursue their goals and overcome barriers to postsecondary education such as time, transportation, and technology,” said Broward College President Gregory Adam Haile, Esq. “Broward UP is ensuring that Broward College is available to everyone in our community.

Since its launch last year, Broward UP has established strategic partnerships with municipalities identified to offer direct support through training opportunities within the cities. Municipalities that have signed MOUs for Broward UP include the cities of Lauderhill, Lauderdale Lakes, West Park, and Hollywood. Additional Broward, UP community partners, include the Urban League, Broward County Housing Authority, Jack and Jill Children’s Center, Boys and Girls Club of Broward County, the YMCA, and Broward County Libraries.
