City of Pompano Beach is Newest Broward UP Partner

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (Dec. 16, 2019) – With just over a year since its launch, Broward UPTM has continued its expansion into local communities, with the City of Pompano Beach becoming the latest municipal partner. Broward UP is the community-centric approach developed by Broward College to raise education access and attainment levels across Broward County.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), approved by the City of Pompano Beach Commission on December 10, will result in the College providing direct support to residents through the design and delivery of:

  • Access strategies to degrees and certifications
  • On-site courses, certification programs, and workshops
  • College and career-readiness campaign
  • Entrepreneurial programming

“Enhancing educational opportunities by connecting City of Pompano Beach residents to Broward College is a win-win for everyone,” said Mayor Rex Hardin. “This partnership, connecting residents with college educators, will help provide students the access to a higher education they otherwise might not have. This has the potential to improve the lives of our residents and community as a whole.”

Broward UP, the UP meaning “unlimited potential,” is aimed at improving the lives of residents in Broward County zip codes with the highest unemployment and lowest education levels. While Broward County’s unemployment rate is approximately three percent, it soars to more than 10 percent in some cities.  In certain areas of the City of Pompano Beach, unemployment is over 11 percent. In response to this disparity, Broward UP has adopted three goals: increase college access and attendance; improve degree and certificate attainment; and holistically raise social and economic mobility.

“Through Broward UP, we are working with our municipal partners to provide training that supports the specific needs of their residents,” said Broward College President Gregory Adam Haile. “We are thrilled to have the City of Pompano Beach as a municipal partner as we continue our efforts to improve the livelihood of every resident in our county.”

The City of Pompano Beach joins the cities of Hollywood, Lauderdale Lakes, West Park, Lauderhill, and Tamarac as Broward UP municipal partners. Additional Broward UP community partners include the Urban League, Broward County Housing Authority, Jack and Jill Children’s Center, Boys and Girls Club of Broward County, the YMCA, Broward County Libraries, HANDY, and the FLITE Center.
