Each September, colleges and universities across the United States recognize the significance of campus safety through a series of events designed to raise public awareness and highlight measures each institution has in place to protect students and employees. At Broward College, we observe the month by hosting Campus Safety Days. In partnership with local law enforcement agencies and community organizations, Campus Safety Days are usually held across the three main campuses and the Miramar Center and showcase resources available to the community through interactive exhibitions, fairs, and information sessions.

As the College continues to operate remotely during the COVID-19 pandemic, this year's observance will look different. The Campus Safety team will offer virtual sessions that they hope to make fun and engaging as the in-person events.

"Throughout the month, we will be hosting webinars, virtual safety training sessions, and sharing important information with the community. We are hoping to use our virtual engagement to remind students, faculty, and staff that we are always here for them, whether they are on campus or not," says Tashika President, district director of Emergency Management.

Embracing the New Normal

The safety of students and employees is always a top priority for the College. In February of 2020, a study conducted by SafeHome.org named Broward College as the safest college in Florida. The ranking solidifies our commitment to the safety of all who attend, work, and visit our campuses and centers.

And although there are fewer students and staff physically present at the College's locations, the Campus Safety team continues to fulfill their responsibilities.

"Even though this is a new environment, our work hasn't changed significantly. We continue to be on campus 24/7, 365 days a year," explains President. "Perhaps the biggest change is enforcing the recommendations from the Center for Disease Control, making sure everyone who visits the campus is abiding by the social distancing and PPE requirements."

A Virtual Helping Hand

During the last few months, Campus Safety has partnered with Student Life to provide timely and helpful training in a virtual setting. By hosting workshops and information sessions on domestic and dating violence, sexual assault awareness, and hurricane preparedness, Campus Safety continues to provide crucial information for our students.

"Sadly, we don't know every student's situation as they continue to do remote learning. They may be dealing with many other safety issues such as domestic or partner violence, sexual assault, and stalking. So we continue to provide information on these issues and share resources that can help them with any of these situations," says President.

This year, Campus Safety Days webinars and information sessions will focus on COVID-19 and mental health, sexual violence prevention, being a proactive bystander, stalking awareness, and Campus Security Authority training.
