FORT LAUDERDALE, FLA. – Sept. 20, 2021 – Cigna has selected Broward College as a recipient of their annual Cigna Outstanding Well-Being Award for demonstrating a strong commitment to improving the health and well-being of its employees through a comprehensive and engaging workplace wellness program.
Broward College has more than 4,300 part-time and full-time employees who work in various capacities to support the institution's mission of "transforming students' lives and enriching our diverse community through academic excellence, innovation, and meaningful career opportunities."
Over the last three years, the College has improved its focus on employee health and well-being. There have also been several initiatives to ensure employees practice daily self-care and receive support during the pandemic, such as:
- Interactive virtual sessions with local health care providers and financial services providers
- Individual counseling sessions by licensed clinical counselors
- Mental and physical health interactive web sessions at department and team meetings
- Purposeful Pauses—a weekly, virtual 20-minute mindfulness practice, and
- Group fitness weekly classes
"This award is a recognition of our efforts in promoting well-being as an organizational imperative," said Sophia Galvin, executive director, Talent and Culture at Broward College. "Our faculty and staff are our greatest asset, and they often serve our students and this community while managing their own challenges, yet they are unrelenting in their work. Our leadership and our team have been focused on ensuring that we care for our employees. President Haile and our leadership team have been focused on ensuring that we have a culture grounded in the care for our employees. We are extremely proud of the programs we have developed and implemented to ensure mental, emotional and physical health and financial wellness."
Galvin lauded Lisa Elsinger, Ph.D. who leads the employee wellness program at the College, for her dedication, innovation and commitment to developing programs that integrate health and well-being into employee experience and organizational culture-building strategy.
While poor health takes a toll on employees, it also affects employers. A national Resilience Study from Cigna found that two-thirds of full-time employees are at risk of not being able to overcome challenges, which can result in lower job satisfaction, lower performance and higher turnover. Employers can help build resilience in their workforce by emphasizing holistic health management and offering tools and resources, including wellness programs.
“Cigna is a leader in improving employee health, and we are honored to recognize good partners like Broward College that share our commitment to employee well-being. Creating a healthy work environment is a rising focus and many employers are seeing increased engagement as a result of wellness initiatives.”
Cigna Well-Being Award applicants are evaluated based on the core components of their well-being program, including leadership engagement, company culture, strategy and goals, implementation, and employee engagement. All applications are scored and reviewed by a panel of Cigna health promotion experts.
