Student Journalist Keynaya Thompson Interviews Dr. Barbara J. Bryan

As the nation recognizes the contributions of African American community members during Black History Month, Broward College is proud to highlight a significant milestone of its own: the appointment of Dr. Barbara Bryan, who in October became the first woman President in the institution’s history.

Broward College student journalist Keynaya Thompson, managing editor of the College’s newspaper, The Observer, interviewed Dr. Bryan for the paper’s latest issue. Keynaya has dreamed of being a writer since middle school. When she started at Broward College in Spring 2023, an opening at The Observer caught her eye. Keynaya was tentative at first, but with encouragement from the paper’s faculty advisor, she gained confidence, leading to more assignments and the opportunity to interview Dr. Bryan.

“Dr. Bryan stressed hard work, commitment, and good communication as essential skills for future success,” said Keynaya. “Beyond the interview, it was a really good conversation.”

An in-field expert in higher education with a commitment to creating student-centered environments, Dr. Bryan’s appointment serves as an inspiring example for young leaders who benefit from witnessing representation at the highest levels of academia.

In The Observer story, Dr. Bryan shared how her journey to the presidency reflects her dedication to the education and advancement of students. She has consistently demonstrated a passion for creating equitable opportunities for students and faculty alike.

Keynaya, a high honors student, hopes to use her Broward College education and experience at The Observer to continue her journalism studies at a four-year university with the goal of becoming an editor-in-chief. Support from her Broward College advisor and involvement in organizations like the Black Student Union have kept Keynaya steady on the path to achieving her writing dreams.

During her talk with Dr. Bryan, it became clear to Keynaya that student engagement is a priority for the President. “Broward College students are in good hands,” she said.
