simulatorThe Emil Buehler Aviation Institute on Broward College’s South Campus recently added some cool, new technology - our new flight and air traffic control simulators. Broward College employees had the opportunity to check out the new equipment, tour the state-of-the-art facility and enjoy a meet and greet during the institute’s Hangar Hangout event.

The simulators are used by students in the Professional Pilot Technology AS and Air Traffic Control AS degrees.

“It was so great to see old friends and meet new colleagues,” said Russell McCaffery, Dean of Transportation Programs “The team worked hard to ensure that everyone enjoyed their time, and we look forward to doing it again next year.”.

One of the goals of Hangar Hangout was for College employees to learn more about Industry, Manufacturing, Construction, & Transportation (IMCT) programs so they can speak with prospective students from a more informed viewpoint.

planeThe avionics and aviation maintenance programs are some of the most sought-after programs among incoming students in the IMCT pathway, with more than 400 students taking aviation maintenance classes, making it the largest of all the programs in IMCT, according to McCaffery.

The latest hangar was built in June 2020 in response to the growing demand of the avionics and aviation maintenance programs. According to McCaffery, there is no shortage of aviation companies who are hiring.

“Wages are increasing rapidly with several companies paying starting wages of $35/hour,” he said. “The College is well-regarded for aviation education. With a growing aviation sector in South Florida, employers need qualified talent, and we offer training to connect students with high-wage jobs.”

According to the Greater Fort Lauderdale Alliance, in 2023, it was estimated that more than 66,000 aviation and aerospace industry workers were employed in the region, and Florida ranks first in maintenance repair, and overhaul (MRO) establishments and third in aircraft manufacturing establishments in the U.S.

If you or someone you know is interested in a career in aviation, you can earn either an Associate of Science, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Applied Sciences or certificates at Broward College today.
