DAVIE, Fla. - When Hurricane Helene devastated parts of Florida in September, Broward College mobilized to aid one of its affected sister institutions.

The College reached out to one of the institutions, Florida Gateway College in Lake City, to see what was needed. The College then put out a call to students, faculty, and staff and set up collection centers at all three campuses.

“As institutions of higher learning, our mission is to serve our communities, whether through education or helping in times of crisis,” said Interim President and COO Dr. Donald P. Astrab in an email announcing the collection drive.

The College accepted donations of toiletries, nonperishable food and other items like grocery gift cards. After three days, the collected donations were loaded onto a truck and sent to their destinations. Astrab said that Dr. Lawrence Barrett, president of Florida Gateway, had called to express his thanks for Broward College's efforts.
