FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - Two hurricanes in two weeks.

When Hurricane Helene hit the state, Broward College officials were quickly on the phone to sister institutions in the affected areas to see what needs they may have. It was quickly evident that they needed help – and Broward College sprang into action, conducting donation drives on all campuses and bringing the supplies up to Flagler State College to help students, faculty and staff.

Fast-forward two weeks, and Hurricane Milton slammed into Florida. Many more communities were hit hard by this storm, which is going to require a long road to recovery. Shortly after the storm passed, Broward College officials received a call from their counterparts at Miami Dade College asking if we could help get the supplies they collected transported to those in need.

There was never any question, and Broward College administrators worked out the logistics to pick up the items from MDC and get them to the communities hit hard by the storm.

“Let me thank you for collaborating with Miami Dade College on delivering Hurricane Milton relief items,” said Tashika President, assistant vice provost, emergency management at Miami Dade College. “You and your team were up for the task to provide transportation assistance…and I just want to extend my sincerest gratitude for your support.”

While we may be different institutions of higher learning, we’re all part of the Florida College System and in times of need, come together to support one another.

“Of course we offered to help,” said Broward College Interim President and COO Dr. Donald P. Astrab. “We have friends and colleagues in those communities who are in need, and whatever we can do to support them as they start the process to rebuild their communities and their lives, we’re going to do.”

Dr. Astrab said that Broward College is working to conduct another donation drive on our campuses as this is going to be a months-long recovery – and those impacted are going to need sustained help.
