No Proposed Lab Fee Increases for Next Academic Year

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Broward College has announced proposed changes to some of its laboratory fees. The changes include reductions to some existing laboratory fees and removing fees from others. There are no proposed laboratory fee increases for this period.

Florida Statute 1009.23(12) (a) grants authority to the Florida College System Institutional Board of Trustees to establish laboratory fees. These fees “shall not exceed the cost of services provided and shall only be charged to persons receiving the service.”

Lab Students 2In compliance with the state statute, Broward College created a specific institutional policy that governs the creation, review, and adjustment of laboratory fees (BC Policy 6.14). The review process includes an analysis of the paid enrollment for the course(s) and the actual allowable expenditures related to the course(s).

The recommendation for the modifications follows an extensive review by the College of the fees already in place. Laboratory fees will be used to purchase items and equipment related to the student learning outcomes and the appropriate course(s) objectives. The fees may also be used to support part-time personnel who work in the laboratories and support students enrolled in the classes.

The proposal will be presented to the Broward College District Board of Trustees on Tuesday, December 3, 2024, at Willis Holcombe Downtown Center, 12th Floor, 111 East Las Olas Boulevard, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33301, If approved, the new fee structure will take effect in the next academic year (August 2025).

Details of the fee structure being put forward to the Board is available ONLINE.
