Keynaya Thompson with awardBroward College’s student publication, The Observer, added even more awards to its list of honors at the recent 65th Annual Florida College Systems Press Association (FCSPA) Conference.

The conference, held in November 2024 in Ocala, focused on the theme of “The Power of Storytelling.” The Observer’s eight awards from the conference include:

  • First place, general column, Keynaya Thompson
  • Second place, design, Observer staff
  • Second place, headlines, Observer staff
  • Second place, news story, David Gonzalez
  • Second place, arts review, Andrea Iriarte
  • Third place, sports column, Jordan Stephenson
  • Third place, illustration, Observer staff
  • Third place, General excellence, Observer staff
“I’m always proud of the Observer students,” said Jennifer Shapiro, the paper’s faculty advisor. “They work really hard to publish a quality publication, so it’s nice to be recognized with multiple awards.”

Shapiro said the paper won seven awards at the same conference in 2023.
