Broward College Students Contribute to
“Bugs” Science Museum Exhibition

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science in Miami is full of bugs – and Broward College students helped put them there!

Students from the College’s Environmental Science program helped bring to life the “Bugs” traveling exhibit on display at the museum through April 20.

“This current collaboration involved creating two display cases to enrich the exhibit,” said David Serrano, Ph.D., a professor and the Environmental Science program manager.

Serrano and his students will be part of the museum’s upcoming nightLAB: Science Swarm, an adults-only science experience that takes place at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22 at the museum, 1101 Biscayne Blvd., Miami. The students will be running an interactive “mount a bug” station.

Broward College’s display cases focus on invasive species and how color is seen by and produced in insects, Serrano said. His students helped design the concept and layout of the cases, and they also wrote the first drafts for all related content.

Serrano said working on this project helped his students realize the impact of science communication.

“They were excited to share their passion for entomology and see how their training was used to educate the public on these critical topics,” he said.
