FORT LAUDERDALE, FL. – On Thursday, April 17, the Broward College Faculty Senate elected its new president, Stephen Muniz, who is an assistant professor of communications with the College.

“I am proud of the relationship with the Faculty Senate, and I am confident that under Professor Muniz’s leadership, that will continue to grow and thrive,” said Broward College President and CEO, Torey Alston. “I look forward to working collaboratively as we make Broward College the number one destination for academic excellence.”

The Faculty Senate is the elected body of the general faculty (including counselors and librarians), through which the faculty can initiate, study, discuss and recommend those objectives, policies and procedures that are properly the common concern of the administration, faculty and staff of Broward College. The role of the Faculty Senate is to encourage the development and maintenance of a climate conducive to excellence in teaching and learning within a framework of academic freedom, professional responsibility and high ethical standards.

Stephen Muniz Bio

Born and raised in New York City, Muniz finished his secondary education at the Lasallian institute of St. Peter’s Boys High School, where he was able to begin his collegiate career at St. John’s University as a dual enrolled student. At this time, he also graduated from the American Legion Boys State of New York Program. Muniz then received both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Florida State University, where he also began his career working with post-secondary institutions.

At FSU, Muniz worked in Resource Centers adding students and faculty with research and writing. Upon completion of his graduate degree, he accepted a position at the University of Miami in its Facility Design and Construction Department. Muniz then held various faculty positions at Miami Dade College, Florida International University, and Broward College.

Throughout all these pursuits and endeavors, Muniz has remained connected to private industry, holding additional positions in the areas of compliance, contract management with government entities, and corporate communications, marketing, and sales.
