FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - Broward College’s hurricane preparedness recently received a boost following the transfer of portable power generators from the Florida Department of Education (FDOE).

FDOE offered 33 portable Generac 5500 generators to multiple state colleges in South Florida. However, two of the colleges did not have a need for additional generators, so the 33 units were reallocated between Broward College and Miami Dade College.

As part of the split, Broward College received 10 new generators that are ready for immediate use, plus eight that will be refurbished. A College furniture vendor agreed to pick up the generators and transport them from Polk County to Broward County.

“The addition of these generators significantly strengthens our emergency response capabilities by providing reliable backup power to key facilities across our campuses,” said Deborah Czubkowski, Vice President, Facilities Management. “They will ensure continuity of operations, protect essential equipment, and support the safety and well-being of our students and staff during power outages or natural disasters.”

The College's Department of Safety, Security & Emergency Preparedness has a Severe Weather Plan in place to respond to any emergencies caused by hurricanes or other inclement weather. The department created a Hurricane Safety Action Guide that includes important info about shelters, an evacuation map and a supply checklist. Ensuring that you registered to receive BC Alerts ensures that you will remain informed in the event of an emergency.

Broward College President and CEO Torey Alston said the generators demonstrate the close partnership between the College and FDOE.

“Hurricanes and inclement weather are a fact of life in South Florida, but with the help of our state partners we are ensuring that Broward College is ready to meet any challenge,” he said.
