FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - This week, Broward College performed a ceremony that has only happened eight times in its 66-year history. 

The Institute of Public Safety (IPS) hosted a Change of Command ceremony to coincide with President Torey Alston’s investiture. As part of the ceremony, Alston presented a new American flag to be flown at IPS on the A. Hugh Adams Central Campus in Davie. The flag is only changed when Broward College selects a new president, according to Wayne Boulier, the dean of IPS. 

IPS cadets lined the courtyard, and Boulier noted that the cadets represented the future of Broward County. 

“These are folks from your neighborhoods and where you live,” he said. 

The IPS ceremony had personal significance for Alston, whose father graduated in 1985 from what was then called the Broward Community College Criminal Justice Institute, followed by a 25-year career at the Broward Sheriff’s Office. In commemoration of that history, Boulier presented Alston with a framed photograph of his father’s graduating class. 

“It means so much to me and my family, having had a front row seat to how Broward College can transform lives,” Alston said. “I’m humbled, I’m grateful, and I’m looking forward to leading Broward College as we become the number one destination for academic excellence.” 

The week of events celebrating both the investiture and Broward College’s 66th anniversary continued afterward with the Community and Alumni Fellowship Breakfast at First Baptist Fort Lauderdale.
