DAVIE, Fla. - The police cadets at Broward College’s Institute of Public Safety line up into formation each morning, but it was a little different on Sept. 11.

Each year, IPS marks the anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City, the Pentagon and a Pennsylvania field. Wayne Boulier, the institute’s dean, said it was important to never forget what happened and the sacrifices that were made.

“Over 400 first responders were just going to work on a normal day, and then out of nowhere this occurred,” Boulier said.

Boulier said he wants cadets to understand what they are protecting, especially younger ones born after 9/11.

“It’s understanding that this isn’t about you, it’s about the community, your fellow citizens,” he said. “We’re part of a collective.”
