DAVIE, Fla. - Broward College has entered into an agreement with a private developer that will secure 16 acres of land on the A. Hugh Adams Central Campus in Davie for the College’s future growth and expansion.

At its Oct. 28 regular meeting, the College’s District Board of Trustees voted to approve the agreement with developer 13th Floor Adler Broward North, LLC, which will terminate a plan to construct 395-unit residential development that was not student housing. The 99-year lease would have taken the land out of College control and created traffic and safety concerns. The proposed development was separate from a 19-acre residential and mixed-use project currently under construction on the southeast side of Central Campus.

"We listened to our students, we listened to our faculty, we listened to our neighbors, we've listened to our donors,” said Board Chair Alexis Yarbrough. “Uniformly, everyone wanted to save this land for the future use of our students, so that we could grow and meet the future needs of whoever those students are.”

Prior to the vote, the Board participated in a public workshop on Oct. 20 at the Central Campus that included presentations from College staff and outside experts and was open to public discussion.

As part of the settlement agreement, the developer will complete needed upgrades to the College’s stormwater system that will connect the north lake to the other lakes on campus and reduce flooding. By utilizing construction equipment already on site, the developer can pass cost savings onto the College. These upgrades will also bring the system in line with drainage district standards. Repairs will also be performed on two parking lots that are currently subject to frequent flooding. Finally, the Institute of Public Safety will see a reconstruction of its police academy driving course that meets the modern standards of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.

"It's student-centered, it's fiscally responsible, and it provides major value to the institution,” said President and CEO Torey Alston.
