DAVIE, Fla. - Panku, Broward College’s student-produced art and literary magazine, has received another prestigious recognition.

For the second consecutive year, it has been ranked in the National Council of Teachers of English's Recognizing Excellence in Art and Literary Magazines (REALM) program.

“To be acknowledged in such a manner is truly an honor,” said Editor-in-Chief Samantha Vital. “It inspires me to continuously create and express a notion; a notion meant to pierce through the pages.”

Panku's Spring issue was recognized as "Superior" out of the 456 schools that applied to REALM in 2025. Submissions came from 44 states, plus Washington, D.C. and six countries. In 2024, Panku’s 60th anniversary issue was among the 125 magazines that were awarded the contest’s highest distinction, REALM First Class.

Photography Editor Christopher Edwards said he was “overjoyed” by the recognition and the ability for the world to see the work that artists contributed to the magazine.

“As always, I am proud of our students—their creativity and the work they put into each issue,” said Regine Darius, an associate professor of English and the magazine’s faculty advisor. “To be acknowledged at the national level two years in a row is an achievement that everyone here at Broward College can claim as their own.”

Panku has been in publication since 1964. The namesake is the Chinese god of creation, and mythology holds that Panku created the sun, the moon, the heavens, and the Earth. Anyone endowed with creativity is said to be possessed by the spirit of Panku.

"Lots of love and work goes into every issue of Panku and to see the Spring '25 issue recognized is nothing but a joy," said former Editor-in-Chief David Rojas Tellez.
