Faculty Art ExhibitionDAVIE, Fla. - For nearly 50 years, Broward College has exhibited faculty art, starting with a humble display in a hallway of the original BC Junior College to today’s formal setting in the Rosemary Duffy Larson Gallery on the A. Hugh Adams Central Campus in Davie.

This year’s annual Visual Art Faculty Exhibition, which includes art across all media and from 18 faculty from all campuses, opens with a reception from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 8. The show runs through Saturday, Nov. 7. Exhibition hours are 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays. The show is free and open to the public.

“It’s our most popular art show, especially among our students,” said Scott Miller, Dean of Arts, Humanities and Design. “They want to support our faculty, and they’re very curious about what their professors are doing with their own art.”

The exhibition will highlight recent faculty works in painting, photography, ceramics, assemblage, drawing, sculpture, and textiles, showcasing the best that the College’s multi-disciplinary educators have to share.

Each year, the exhibition features anywhere from a dozen to 50 pieces depending on their size, the show’s theme and other factors. The Exhibition’s planning began with faculty submitting their works to a selection committee composed of their professorial peers. The final pieces were chosen based on their quality, scale, how they work together thematically and other factors, said Cole Miller, Director of the Larson Gallery and an Adjunct Professor.

The title of this year’s show is Gesamtkunstwerk, a German term meaning a "total work of art". Borrowed from the German Romantics of the 19th Century, it describes a creative design or performance that combines multiple art forms into a unified whole.

Cole Miller and Gallery Assistant Caitlyn Manthorpe, a 2022 alumna and abstract painter studying for her bachelor’s degree at the New World School of the Arts, spent many hours setting up the artworks and the lighting in the Larson Gallery, positioning everything so that the pieces complement each other and draw visitors naturally around the room.

“The goal of the show each year is to showcase the talent of our incredible faculty,” Cole Miller said.

Gesamtkunstwerk will feature artworks by Nathalie Alfonso, Maria Fernanda Barriga, Eduardo Burgos, Gabino A. Castelán, Angelica Clyman, Teresa Diehl, Shady Eshghi, Joshua A. Hayes, Jan Johnson, Yasmin Khalaf, Kohl King, James Lansing, Rebeca Lopera Esteban, Gardner Cole Miller, Claudia Newman, Lisa Rockford, Nicholas Starr, and Niko Yulis.

Burgos’ artwork features a comics character named “Mijo,” a young boy who saves the day. “My work focuses on the moral clarity of traditional fables while embracing the ambiguity and narrative possibilities of contemporary comics,” according to Burgos’ artist statement for the show. “Through digital drawing, I explore how character, gesture, and sequential imagery can communicate experiences that resist straightforward explanation, using narrative not simply to tell stories but to investigate how memory, empathy, and meaning are constructed.”
