Broward College among Top 100 Colleges Producing Associate Degrees for Minorities

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL (July 12, 2013) – Broward College ranks third in the nation among colleges for the number of associate degrees conferred on minority students, according to a recent report in Diverse Issues in Higher Education, a magazine published bi-weekly that informs leaders from academe, industry and public policy about current trends and issues that are going on in the United ​States.

For the 2011-12 academic year, Broward College conferred a total of 3,970 associate’s degrees on minority students, a 32 percent increase from the previous year. Among those graduates, Broward College was ranked third in conferring associate’s degrees to African American students, up 31 percent from the previous academic year, and sixth in conferring associate’s degrees to Hispanic American students, an increase of 30 percent.

 “We are proud of the efforts we have made to provide education to minorities, and all students, and we are honored to be recognized for our efforts,” said Broward College President J. David Armstrong, Jr.

In keeping with a trend that began de​cades ago, the number of women minority graduates far outnumbered that of men throughout the country. At Broward College, there were 2,471 female and 1,499 male graduates during the year analyzed by the poll.
