Broward College and the Broward Center for the Performing Arts Host Distinguished Speaker Series

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL (September 12, 2013) – The inaugural Fort Lauderdale Speaker Series presented by Broward College at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, 201 SW 5th Avenue, Fort Lauderdale, will take place from October 23, 2013 to May 21, 2014. This series features seven distinguished speakers who will share their exciting experiences, insights, points of view and behind the scenes stories on some of the most current topics of the day. Each lecture will be followed by a Q&A session with questions submitted by audience members. The 2013-14 speakers include -

Steve Forbes
Wednesday, October 23, 2013, 8 p.m.
Steve Forbes is a former Republican presidential candidate, as well as chairman & editor-in-chief of Forbes Media. At Forbes, he oversees dozens of national and international publications, and successfully launched Forbes.com and other sites in the digital/new media arena. Forbes magazine has more than 900,000 readers domestically and more than 4,000,000 internationally.

Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.
Wednesday, November 20, 2013, 8 p.m.
Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. has been at the cross-roads of American history all of his life. He has devoted himself to protecting the environment and has spearheaded the Riverkeeper movement. Kennedy has been named one of Time magazine’s “Heroes for the Planet” and will join the Series just days before the 50th Anniversary of President John F. Kennedy’s tragic trip to Dallas.

Bob Woodward
Wednesday, January 22, 2014, 8 p.m.
Bob Woodward is one of the nation’s most highly respected journalists and with Carl Bernstein, helped to uncover the Watergate scandal leading to President Nixon’s resignation. Woodward continues as a journalist for the Washington Post and is the two-time Pulitzer Prize winning author of numerous books, the most recent of which is his 17th and titled The Price of Politics.

Jeannette Walls
Wednesday, February 12, 2014, 8 p.m.
Jeannette Walls is a journalist and author of The Glass Castle, which was recently named as a “Top 10 Book of the Decade” by Amazon. Her memoir has sold more than 3.5 million copies in the U.S. and has been translated into 22 languages. Lionsgate has purchased the movie rights and will be releasing it in 2013 with Jennifer Lawrence in the starring role.

Michael Beschloss
Wednesday, March 12, 2014, 8 p.m.
Newsweek has called Michael Beschloss “the nation’s leading presidential historian.” He is a #1 best–selling author of nine books and can be regularly seen on NBC where he serves as the network’s official presidential historian. Beschloss can also be seen regularly on the PBS NewsHour. His current project is a history of American presidents in wartime.

Soledad O’Brien
Wednesday, April 23, 2014, 8 p.m.
Soledad O’Brien is an acclaimed journalist and former host of CNN’s “Starting Point.” She leads Starfish Media in the production of documentaries focusing on the divisive issues of race, class and poverty. O’Brien’s works include “Who is Black in America?” “Latino in America,” “The Women of 9/11,” Don’t Fail Me: Education in America” and the Emmy Award winning “Crisis in Haiti.

Jean-Michel Cousteau
Wednesday, May 21, 2014, 8 p.m.
As the son of famed ocean explorer Jacques Cousteau, Jean-Michel has dedicated himself to protecting our “water planet” for the last four decades. Cousteau founded Ocean Futures Society, a conservation and educational organization, and serves as its spokesman. He has produced more than 80 films, earning an Emmy Award and a Peabody Award for his work.
