Broward College’s Bailey Hall Announces 2013-14 Signature Arts Series Events

Events from October 24, 2013 through March 15, 2014 On Sale Now

Fort Lauderdale, FL (September 11, 2013) – Broward College’s Bailey Hall, 3501 SW Davie Road, Davie, recently announced its new 2013-14 Signature Art Series scheduled to kick-off in October. Eight audience-pleasing performances will be included in the new series, which feature an assortment of accomplished artists from comedians to Grammy-Award winning musicians, as well as a diverse array of master classes, workshops and lectures.  

“A great deal of thought has been placed on finding a balance between the highest quality artists for what they can bring to our students and campus, and also what appeals to the entire region of South Florida,” said Eric Kerchner, associate dean of cultural affairs at Broward College. “I’m proud to be leading Bailey Hall back to being a great asset to the Southern Florida community.”

Second City: Happily, Ever Laughter
Thursday, October 24, 8 p.m.,
Cost: $25

Chicago’s legendary comedy theatre, The Second City, presents Happily Ever Laughter, a hilarious revue featuring some of the best sketches, songs and improvisations from The Second City’s fifty-three-year history. Drawing on classic material from The Second City archives as well as scenes ripped from the morning headlines, The Second City’s Happily Ever Laughter is your chance to see comedy stars in the making in an evening of smart, cutting edge comedy.

Big Bad Voodoo Daddy
Thursday, November 7, 8 p.m.
Cost: $25to $35

The year 2013 marks the 20^th anniversary of Big Bad Voodoo Daddy – a high energy, nine-piece swing influenced ensemble. Their new album Rattle Them Bones features such songs as "Diga Diga Do," "The Jitters" and "It Only Took a Kiss." Their original hits through the years include "You & Me and the Bottle Makes Three (Tonight)" and "Go Daddy-O," which were featured in the 1996 indie film "Swingers." Their albums include the platinum-selling "Americana Deluxe" and follow-ups "This Beautiful Life," "Save My Soul" and "Everything You Want for Christmas." The band's numerous TV appearances include "Dancing with the Stars," "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno," "Late Night with Conan O'Brian" and "Last Call with Carson Daley," for which the band wrote and recorded the show's theme song.

Kronos Quartet
Tuesday, November 12, 8 p.m.

For 40 years, the Kronos Quartet—David Harrington and John Sherba on violin, Hank Dutt on viola, and Sunny Yang on cello—have pursued a singular artistic vision, combining a spirit of fearless exploration with a commitment to continually re-imagining the string quartet experience. In the process, Kronos has become one of the most celebrated and influential groups of our time, performing thousands of concerts worldwide, releasing more than 50 recordings of extraordinary breadth and creativity, collaborating with many of the world’s most intriguing and accomplished composers and performers, and commissioning more than 800 works and arrangements for string quartet.

Paula Poundstone
Thursday, December 5, 8 p.m.

Poundstone's spontaneity and intelligent humor makes her the perfect panelist for NPR's “Wait Wait...Don't Tell Me,” where she gets to match wits with some of our nation's leading pundits. The show is a winner of the prestigious Peabody Award for broadcasting excellence. She has starred in solo specials on HBO and BRAVO, and made frequent TV appearances on Letterman, Leno, Craig Ferguson, and Garrison Keillor's “A Prairie Home Companion.”  Poundstone is also an author and lecturer.  She wrote her first book for Random House, “There is Nothing in This Book That I Meant to Say” (with foreward by Mary Tyler Moore) and is hard at work on her second tome for the same imprint. Her first CD is titled “I Heart Jokes: Paula Tells Them in Maine.” Her editorial pieces can be heard on NPR's Morning Edition.  

Symphony of the Americas

The Symphony of the Americas will be returning to their founding roots with a festival holiday concert featuring a chorus of holiday grandeur. This concert guarantees holiday cheer taking you through the holiday season.

Dar He: The Story of Emmitt Till
Saturday, January 11, 7 p.m.
Cost: $10 (limited seating)

Actor Michael Wiley inhabits over 20 characters in this tour de force performance that lays bare one of the most painful chapters in American Civil Rights History. This performance will be part of the "Year of Social Justice" at Broward College's Central campus. Each performance will be followed by questions and answers with the audience.

Paul Taylor 2 Dance Company
Saturday, February 8, 8 p.m.
Cost: $25 to $35

Paul Taylor is one of the greatest American choreographers, and this evening will feature several of his most celebrated works. Taylor established Taylor 2 in 1993 to ensure that his works could be seen by audiences all over the world, unhindered by economic or technical limitations. Taylor worked with longtime colleague Linda Hodes to create a company that could accommodate performance requests as well as teach and provide community outreach. Taylor looked back to the 1954 origins of the Paul Taylor Dance Company for the structure of his new company, six professionals with a particular gift for his style who perform his work throughout the world.

Reinventing Radio: An Evening with Ira Glass
Saturday, March 15, 8 p.m.
Cost: $30 to $40

Ira Glass, the creator of the public radio show “This American Life” talks about his program and how it’s put together: what makes a compelling story, where they find the amazing stories for their show, and how he and his staff are trying to push broadcast journalism to do things it doesn’t usually do. As part of this, Glass mixes stories from the show, live onstage, combining his narration with pre-taped quotes and music, recreating the sound of the show as the audience watches. He plays funny and memorable moments from the show and talks about what was behind their creation.          

In addition to the new Signature Art Series, Bailey Hall is undergoing interior upgrades to enhance its appearance and guest experience. A new state-of-the-art high definition projector was recently installed to increase Bailey Hall’s quality of movies and live streamed arts events offered to the public. Bailey Hall will also offer valet parking and enhanced concessions for purchase.
