Student Life Wins Second Regional Award for Event of the Year

The "Boo" is with Broward College

The Downtown Center’s Student Life staff has learned it has been awarded the Program/Event of the Year by the Association for the Promotion of Campus Activities’ Southern Region. The Southern Region is the largest in the APCA, with a membership of more than 200 two and four-year institutions.

The award-winning program was “May the BOO Be with You,” a Halloween event, comprised of educational displays, class discussions, and a live concert by Aunt Beru from “Star Wars” episodes two and three. Archie Asar and Susan Hawk created the award-winning event. Asar will travel to Atlanta to accept the award at APCA’s annual National Programming Conference. The award makes Downtown Center eligible for the National Program/Event of the Year.

“it’s a big honor to win something like this,” said Asar, who also has won four national APCA awards. “We have some heavy hitters in our region, schools with large staffs and big budgets.”  This marks the second time the Downtown Center Student Life staff has won APCA’s regional Program/Event of the Year award. Asar and Finn also collaborated on the first winning program, “Poetry beyond Borders,” in February 2012.
