FORT LAUDERDALE, FL (May 29, 2014) – During a mock interview session, hosted since 2011 by the Teacher Educator Program (TEP) at Broward College, ten graduates were immediately offered teaching contracts by local principals as a result of their interviews. The department originally conceived the idea of interview practice sessions as a way to allow future educators the opportunity to gain confidence and practice their skills before securing their first real interview. This year was the most successful yet with nearly 40 principals from private, public and charter schools, at primary and secondary levels, participating and conducting the interviews.
“All ten students offered teaching contracts accepted their offers,” said Aline Sarria, Ed.D., dean of TEP. “We believe events like these show the community that quality teachers are in demand, and Broward College's Teacher Education Program is doing a wonderful job in meeting that demand.”
Priscilla Ribeiro, principal at Ft. Lauderdale High School, who wanted to hire one of the student teachers, said, “Who would have thought Broward College would be the number one producer of the state’s best teachers?”
For the past five years, the Teacher Educator Program’s bachelor degree program at Broward College has placed 85 percent of graduates in teaching positions, not including those students who have gone on to work out of state or attend a graduate program. The five areas that TEP produces educators are exceptional student education, middle grades general science, secondary biology, middle grades mathematics and secondary mathematics.
