Broward College Celebrates the Accomplishments of its Nurses During National Nurses Week

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL (May 5, 2014) -- During National Nurses Week, celebrated May 6 - 12, Broward College honors the hard work and dedication of America’s registered nurses, and the​ impact they have on the lives and health of their patients. With more than 50 years of graduating competent, caring nurses with  degrees in nursing, Broward College is proud of the achievements and exciting future of the nursing program, including:

-Linda Washington, Ph.D., associate dean of RN-BSN Program, and Claudia Sahagun, professor of communication, led a service-learning trip to Guayaquil, Ecuador with eleven RN-to-BSN students. During the four day trip, the students – all registered nurses – evaluated more than 340 children and adults, and screened them for a variety of conditions ranging from cardiovascular irregularities to skin rashes and worms.

-The Bachelor of Science in Nursing program (BSN) inducted its first group of honor students into the BSN Honor Society and will be joining Sigma Theta Tau International Nurses Honor Society in the fall.

-The Advanced Health Assessment students conducted its first College and community wide Health Fair at Broward College North Campus in March, which was a huge success and will conduct future community health fairs at each Broward College campus and at the following locations: Broward Partnership for the Homeless; Broward Outreach Centers (Hollywood and Pompano sites); and the Ronald McDonald House.

-The Krause Family Foundation donated $1 million to support nursing and health sciences programs at Broward College. The donation will support the Kathryn Krause Scholarship for Nurses, the Kathryn Krause Lecture Series, Krause Family Medical Simulation Mannequins and the Kathryn Krause Book Award for HANDY Students.

-The Health Science Simulation Center (HSSC) will open at Central Campus. The three-story HSSC will mirror the facilities of an acute-care hospital, and will feature an EMS ambulance bay, emergency department, critical care units, cardiovascular units, medical-surgical unit, labor and delivery suite, and mother/baby unit. Students in Broward College’s nursing and other allied healthcare programs will train here.
