"Vessel of Opportunity," a poem by South Campus student Jasmin Lewicki, has received first prize in the adult student division of Career Convergence Magazine's 48th annual Poetry & Poster Contest. Career Convergence Magazine is published by the National Career Development Association.
Lewicki's poem finished second in the campus contest, which announced its winners in December 2013. Lewicki won an Amazon Kindle, finishing second to winner Ashley Adderley. From there, the first, second and third-place local finishers were entered in state and national poetry and poster contests. Lewicki was the only national winner from Florida. Here's her winning poem:
Mankind's path has varied,
a century's errors recorded in history.
Marking the route which was taken,
Mapping the depths of the waters
for the next generation to plot their track line.
Ensuring that our future has longitude in its latitude,
so each bright mind of today charts the course
for the undiscovered terrain tomorrow.
Aware that the bearings we choose
can cause waves or part waters,
fill puddles or oceans,
create ripples or riptides,
we are the navigators of the second century,
the cartographers of the unknown.
The career we choose is our vessel of opportunity,
and that is where our journey begins.
