Broward College Offers Fire Safety Tips for National Fire Prevention Month

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL (September 25, 2014) – To observe National Fire Prevention Week, which is observed from October 5 through 11, Broward College’s Director of Safety and Chief Fire Official Marcus Robinson is offering tips on how to prevent a fire at home, school or the workplace.

Practice caution when cooking. The National Fire Protection Association estimates that two of every five home fires start in the kitchen. To avoid causing a fire, make sure to not only keep an eye on what you are cooking, especially if you are cooking with high temperature and using oils, but also keep your counter top and cooking area free of anything that can burn, such as plastic bags or paper towels. If a fire starts in the microwave, keep the door closed and unplug the unit.

Never leave a burning candle unattended. Many fires happen when a candle has been placed too close to something that can burn. To avoid a possible fire catastrophe, make sure candles are kept in sturdy holders on a flat and clean tabletop or opt for flameless candles.

Even electricity can cause fires. The bulbs in lamps and lighting fixtures can grow very hot, so just like an open flame, it is best to keep flammable objects away from them. As for power outlets, it is best to not overload them and to use only surge protectors or power strips that have internal overload protection.

Practice family fire safety first. Teach children the basics of fire safety at a young age. Make sure they know how to properly notify the fire department using the 911 system. Test the fire alarm with them every month and conduct drills so they know the correct escape routes and evacuation plan. This is a crucial step in not only saving lives but understanding the correct fire safety procedures.
