Florida Senator Eleanor Sobel to Moderate Town Hall Meeting at Broward College on the Legalization of Medical Marijuana

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL (September 12, 2014) – Florida Senator Eleanor Sobel will moderate a town hall meeting about Amendment 2, the legalization of medical marijuana, on Tuesday, September 16, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Judson A. Samuels South Campus Performing and Cultural Arts Center, 7200 Pines Blvd., Pembroke Pines. 

This event, which is free and open to the public, coincides with the gubernatorial debate taking place at Broward College in October, and will bring together two organizations, United for Care and Drug Free Florida, as they debate their reasons for and against the legalization of medical marijuana in the State. Supervisor of Elections Brenda Snipes will also give a presentation about the changes to voting rights in Florida.

“We are excited to collaborate with Senator Sobel and Broward County Supervisor of Elections Brenda Snipes to raise awareness about key issues and the importance of voting,” said Broward College President J. David Armstrong, Jr. “Not only are we exposing our students and the community to issues, we are preparing them with the knowledge they need to make educated decisions in the upcoming election.” 

Attendees can expect to hear discussion of the potential windfall of sales and tax revenues, as well as the benefits for Floridians suffering should medical marijuana legalization be expanded. Arguments by the side opposing Amendment 2 are anticipated to include information about the detrimental effects of using marijuana, including the fact that many consider it to be a gateway drug.  

Supervisor of Elections Snipes, who is committed to improving voter education, awareness and outreach, will provide information, and voter registration forms will be available onsite for those interested in registering. 

Sobel, who is a Democratic member of the Florida Senate, represents District 33, which includes Cooper City, Dania Beach, Davie, Hallandale Beach, Hollywood, Pembroke Pines, Plantation and Miramar.
