Broward College Hosts Marriage Equality Discussions

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL (September 18, 2014) – With a focus on marriage equality as an important political discussion, Broward College has organized a series of events that examine the concept of marriage from a social, legal and philosophical perspective. These events, free and open to the public, are part of Broward College’s series of civic engagement events, titled “Educate, Engage, Enrich Florida,” and coincide with the Florida Gubernatorial Debate taking place on October 15 at Broward College’s Central Campus, 3501 Davie Road, Davie.

Equity: A Discussion about Marriages

Thursday, October 2, at 12:30 p.m., North Campus, Building 46, Room 152

To understand the concept of marriage not in a traditional or religious context, but from a strictly legal and contractual perspective, Paul Moore, Broward College’s associate dean of academic affairs for business administration, accounting and paralegal studies, will conduct a lecture from the viewpoint of a lawyer about what equity means in relation to marriage. He will discuss several recent rulings, including Monroe County Circuit Judge Luis M. Garcia striking down Florida's voter-approved ban on same-sex marriage. Sex, Marriage, God and Politics

Broward College professors will lead a discussion between faculty and students on topics related to government, public policy, and the history of the “institute of marriage.” They will also explore why governments have been interested in protecting the traditional understanding of marriage against those who seek to redefine it. Religious Liberty and Same Sex Marriage Forum

Monday, October 13, from 7 – 9 p.m. Judson A. Samuels South Campus Performing and Cultural Arts Center

In the wake of a recent ruling declaring Florida’s ban of same-sex marriages unconstitutional, a panel of local academics and community leaders, including Michael Simon, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Florida, and Michael Sheedy, executive director of the Florida Conference of Catholic Bishops, will discuss the extent to which the impending legalization of same-sex marriages will affect churches, religiously affiliated institutions, such as hospitals, charities and schools, and businesses to operate freely.
