Broward College Announces 2014-15 Signature Arts Series at Bailey Hall

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL (October 24, 2014) – Broward College recently announced its 2014-15 Signature Art Series scheduled to kick-off in November at Bailey Hall, 3501 S.W. Davie Road, Davie. Ten audience-pleasing performances will be included in the series, which features an assortment of accomplished artists, as well as master classes for students and the community. 

 “A great deal of thought went into finding a balance between the highest quality artists and also what appeals to the college community and entire South Florida region,” said Eric Kerchner, associate dean of cultural affairs at Broward College. “We have a lot of great performances coming up and can’t wait to welcome the community to the recently renovated Bailey Hall.” 

The 2014-15 Signature Art Series includes –

Amernet String Quartet
Sunday, November 9, 4 p.m.
Cost: $20 to $25
An evening of Jewish Liturgical Music featuring the great American cantor Daniel Gross and pianist Alan Mason, this concert will commemorate Jewish music and culture. On November 9, 1938, a series of attacks against the Jewish population in Austria and Germany was coordinated by the Nazi government. More than 1,000 synagogues and 7,000 Jewish businesses were burned, and 30,000 people were arrested and incarcerated in concentration camps in what is known as Kristallnacht (The Night of Broken Glass). An exhibit explaining the historical event of Kristallnacht will be on display in the Bailey Hall lobby prior to the performance.

Hubbard Street 2 Dance Company
Saturday, November 22, 8 p.m.
Cost: $20 to $25
Catch the excitement as Chicago's leading contemporary dance company returns to Bailey Hall with two dance premieres, as well as favorites from its repertoire, including DesertDweller and new works by Ihsan Rustem and Bryan Arias. 

A Jazz Holiday featuring Metta Jazz
Saturday, December 6, 8 p.m.
Cost: $20 to $25
Award winning jazz group Metta Quintet will perform a festive holiday themed concert. The Broward Jazz Combo will join Metta Jazz in the culmination of a three-day residency at Broward College.

The Beethoven Project
Beginning Friday, January 16 through Sunday, March 27; selected Fridays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 7 p.m.
Cost: $15 per performance; $35 for three performances; or $80 for all eight performances
To celebrate the addition of Bailey Hall's new Steinway Grand Piano, award winning classical pianist Gustavo Romero will play the entire canon of Beethoven piano sonatas over eight spectacular performances. Performance dates are January 16, 18, 23, 25, March 20, 22, 27 and 29, 2015.

One Noble Journey: A Box Marked Freedom
Sunday, January 29, 11 a.m.; Monday, January 30, 11 a.m.; and Tuesday, January 31, 7 p.m.
Cost: $10
Actor and playwright Michael Wiley wowed audiences with his one-man play, “Dar He: The Story of Emmett Till” last year. With limited seating on the Bailey Hall stage, the intimate nature of the performance will be enhanced. “A Noble Journey” marks the story of a slave named Henry Wilson who mailed himself to freedom in a wooden box. Wiley will conduct a Q&A after each performance.

A Night at the Movies
Saturday, February 21, 8 p.m.
Cost: $15
The Broward Symphony Orchestra will play the orchestral scores for two famous silent films, Charlie Chaplin’s “The Immigrant” and Buster Keaton’s “Cops,” live while the films are projected. In the second half of the program, The Broward Symphony Orchestra will present selections from the “Lord of the Rings” soundtrack.

A Celebration of Japanese Culture
Saturday, February 28, 1 p.m.
Cost: $10
Davie’s own Fushu Daiko Drummers will put on a special performance featuring all the big taiko drums from Japan. Prior to the performance, a festival showcasing crafts, activities and foods from Japanese culture will be held at the entrance to Bailey Hall.

An Evening with Rick Steves
Friday, March 6, 8 p.m.
Cost: $20 to $25
Rick Steves, author of more than 50 European travel guidebooks and host of the public television series “Rick Steves' Europe,” believes that thoughtful travel expands our world view and shapes how we address the challenges confronting our nation. His lectures, TV shows, and guidebooks have helped millions of Americans not only enjoy maximum travel thrills per mile, minute and euro, but has also helped Americans become better citizens of the planet. Steves will share how the other 96 percent of humanity see our nation and explore how his social activism has grown naturally out of his travel experiences.

The Ensemble Venezuela
Saturday, March 14, 8 p.m.
Cost: $20 to $35
Award-winning pianist, composer and Guggenheim Fellow Edward Simon will lead this incredible jazz sextet as they perform a powerful mix of the rhythms of Venezuela with American jazz. 

A Vision of Cape Breton
Saturday, March 21, 8 p.m.
Cost: $20 to $30
Canadian fiddle master Natalie MacMaster and Irish fiddle legend Donnell Leahy will celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with a festive tribute to the great tradition of Celtic music and dancing. The evening will highlight the unique talents, influences and stories of the first family of traditional fiddlers through dancing, singing, and world-class music-making.           

Bailey Hall recently underwent interior upgrades to enhance its appearance and guest experience. A new state-of-the-art high definition projector was installed to increase Bailey Hall’s quality of movies and live streamed arts events offered to the public. Bailey Hall also offers valet parking and enhanced concessions for purchase.
