Broward College's men's soccer team will clash with Eastern Florida State College on Friday, October 10, at 6 p.m. at Broward College's Judson A. Samuels South Campus Soccer Complex, 7200 Pines Blvd., Pembroke Pines, in the first of three crucial games to determine who represents the state in the National Junior College Athletic Association's (NJCAA) 2014 playoffs. Broward College will be offering free food, beverages and giveaways to all fans in attendance. Admission and parking at the game is free.
As the only two men's soccer teams in NJCAA's Region 8, the team representing the region must post a winning record against the other team to advance.
"It's true at every level in any sport – NFL, NBA, Major League Baseball, any of them – a big crowd is the home team advantage", said Munga Eketebi, coach of the Broward College Seahawks. "Fans will certainly be treated to two great teams playing a high caliber level of soccer. Both teams have good speed and skills, exactly where they should be for nationally ranked teams."
Eketebi, a former FIU standout and later the Panthers coach, has led the Seahawks to a 4-1 record in his first season at the helm of the program. The Seahawks have received votes for a spot in the NJCAA's Top 20 poll. Eastern Florida State College of Melbourne sports a 5-2 record and is ranked ninth in the September 23 NJCAA poll. Last year, the Titans went 13-2-1 and were eliminated in the first round of nationals.
"This Seahawks team is getting better every day", said Eketebi. "Their mentality for the game is increasing. We've already had two games against nationally-ranked teams, and the players have shown they can play with the best."
The Seahawks are paced by a trio of freshmen, including forwards Christopher Dessin (North Miami) and Nehemiah Perry (Hamden, Conn.), and midfielder Santiago Schmid (Miami).
