Broward College Presents “Turn up My Rights,” a Discussion on Music and Politics

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL (October 21, 2014) – Throughout history, music has been a catalyst for social commentary and change. To explore the relationship between politics and music, Broward College presents “Turn up My Rights,” which will take place on Wednesday, October 22, from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at the Judson A. Samuels South Campus Performing and Cultural Arts Center, 7200 Pines Blvd., Pembroke Pines. The event is free and open to the public.

Facilitated by Broward College faculty Robert Chalwell, Ph.D., assistant professor of political science, and Rudy Jean-Bart, assistant professor of history, this interactive presentation and discussion will touch on many different genres, including negro spirituals that secretly detailed escape routes to freedom in the North for southern slaves; the iconic mezzo-soprano Marian Anderson singing "My Country Tis Of Thee" at the Lincoln Memorial in 1939; the message of equality and love in Bob Marley’s reggae; and popular modern styles, like Hip Hop, Rock and Dubstep.
