FORT LAUDERDALE, FL (Nov. 19, 2014) – Broward College’s new Health Sciences Simulation Center, 3501 S.W. Davie Road, Davie, will hold a grand opening event on Friday, Nov. 21, from 9:30 to 11 a.m. The event will include a keynote address by Dr. Pamela Jeffries, vice provost for digital initiatives at Johns Hopkins University and professor at the School of Nursing, titled “Clinical Simulations: The Places We Are Going and Will Be Going,” and a guided tour of the new facility. Broward College President J. David Armstrong, Jr., Broward College District Board of Trustees Vice Chair Pamela Stephany and Dr. Mercedes Quiroga, campus president of the A. Hugh Adams Central Campus, will also speak. The event is free and open to the public.
Designed as a simulated hospital setting, the Broward College Health Sciences Simulation Center is a three-story, state-of-the-art building of which 32,000-square feet is dedicated to creating an engaging, real-life simulated clinical experience that mirrors an acute care facility. The Center includes an emergency department with a triage entrance, exam rooms, cardiovascular suite, birthing suite, medical-surgical room and critical care room, as well as a hospital sized elevator, which allows for the transport of “manikins” —life-sized, anatomically correct models of the human body. Each floor has a centrally located control room, equipped with audio and video technology to provide effective playback for debriefing sessions, allowing faculty and the simulation team to monitor patient’s rooms and offer guidance to students.
