FORT LAUDERDALE, FL (Jan. 13, 2015) – To offer the rare and breathtaking view of astronauts preparing to explore other worlds and distant planets, Broward College will host the world premiere documentary of filmmaker Jonathan Bird’s “Space School,” at the Buehler Planetarium, located at 3501 Davie Road, Davie, on Friday, Jan. 16 at 7 and 8: 30 p.m. This event is by invitation only, though working media are invited to attend.
“We strive to bring educational and exciting events to the community, so it is an honor to be able to be the first in the world to show this premiere,” said Susan Barnett, director of the Buehler Planetarium and Observatory.
Bird, an Emmy Award-winning underwater cinematographer and producer, as well as host of the Public Television series “Jonathan Bird’s Blue World,” shot the documentary film for projection in fulldome theaters. With the cooperation of NASA, Bird and his team filmed astronaut Chris Cassidy training for space walks at the Neutral Buoyancy Lab in Houston and astronaut Jeannette Epps practicing techniques for exploring distant asteroids and planets at the Aquarius Reef Base in Florida.
“Space School” is among the first digitally-filmed live action dome format films. The film was shot at 60 frames per second, more than twice the frame rate of conventional film, creating an amazingly life-like experience.
