U.S. Deputy Secretary of Energy Elizabeth Sherwood-Randall Discusses Energy Workforce at Broward College

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL (Jan. 23, 2015) – U.S. Deputy Secretary of Energy Elizabeth Sherwood-Randall recently visited Broward College’s North Campus to participate in a roundtable with nearly 30 representatives from local businesses and industries, non-governmental organizations, disadvantaged communities and higher educational institutions to discuss the outlook and needs of the current and future energy workforce development system.  

“It was an honor to welcome Deputy Secretary of Energy Elizabeth Sherwood-Randall to Broward College,” said Broward College’s North Campus President Avis Proctor, Ed.D. “The roundtable was a rare opportunity that allowed many diverse groups and organizations across the community to come together and share their ideas with the Department of Energy on how to improve access and increase completion in STEM fields while displaying our strong connections with the manufacturing industry.” 

After arriving, Deputy Secretary Sherwood-Randall toured Broward College’s advanced manufacturing lab. Shortly following the tour, Director of Continuing Education at Broward College, Gwynne Gonzalez, delivered a presentation on Project RENEW (Refugees Entering New Enterprises & Workforce), a program that provides a variety of job readiness trainings to refugees, those seeking asylum and victims of human trafficking residing in Broward County. The presentation focused on ways to provide more opportunities to disadvantaged populations and help them enter the workforce

The roundtable, titled “Creating a Diverse Workforce by Eliminating Barriers to Enter Energy, Energy-Related and STEM Careers by Disadvantaged Individuals,” was moderated by Broward College’s Academic Dean Awilda Delgado. The diverse group of participants each shared insight into initiatives they were currently undertaking to encourage disadvantaged and underrepresented individuals to participate in the energy, energy-related and STEM fields. They also discussed the various challenges they faced in order to form solutions for how they could assist one another in bringing more diversity to the current workforce.
