Broward College Expert Offers Tips for Credit Education Month

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL (Feb. 27, 2015) – Having and maintaining a good credit score determines a lot regarding major life decisions, including the ability to obtain a car loan or mortgage. To observe Credit Education Month in March, Broward College Assistant Professor of Accounting Simone Keize, CPA, is offering tips on how to manage personal finances efficiently and effectively, as well as maintain a good credit score

To boost your credit utilization and rating, never use more than 20 – 30% of your overall credit limit on a monthly basis. Spending below your limit and paying it of in a timely manner will show responsibility and encourage your creditor to consider increasing your credit limit.

Put your student loan payments on automatic debit. Although it seems obvious, defaulting on your student loan payment can be detrimental. Your wages may be garnished, and federal and state income tax refunds may be intercepted. It also will remain on your credit report for seven years after the default claim is paid, making it difficult to obtain a loan or mortgage.

Always have a budget. Having a financial plan in the form of a budget will help to eliminate unnecessary spending which sometimes leaves us relying on credit cards to cover our deficiencies. You should always know how much income you’re expecting and list your projected expenses.

Build your credit. Never underestimate the power of a secured credit card when trying to build your credit. A secured card requires a cash collateral deposit which functions as the credit line for the account. Banks tend to give rewards for timely payment and good management by extending the credit limit over time.
