Broward College and FAU Partner to Create This is a Canvas Street Art Exhibition in Downtown Fort Lauderdale

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL (March 18, 2015) – To provide an area of urban landscape where artists can create work for the community to engage, Broward College and Florida Atlantic University have partnered to begin a free, public street art project, titled “This is a Canvas,” located at Broward College’s Willis Holcombe Center, 111 E. Las Olas Boulevard, Fort Lauderdale, Building 33. The 90-foot wide blank exterior west wall of the FAU/Broward College Higher Education Complex will serve as the “canvas,” where artists will contribute to visual art projects throughout the year.

“The idea is to bring more public art into the heart of downtown Fort Lauderdale in a dynamic way that reflects the changing identity of the city, as well as create a dialogue between the creators and public,” said Jonathan Morgan, liaison and adjunct professor in Broward College’s Visual and Performing Arts Department. “With the entire creative process on display, visitors will be able to directly interact with the artist as they are creating their masterpiece, which makes it such a unique experience.”

Five artists will participate in the inaugural cycle of the exhibition, including Luis A. Gutierrez, Broward College alumnus; Tyler K. Smith, Broward College faculty; Charlotte Maloney and Naghmeh Goodarzi, FAU alumnae; and Henning Haupt, FAU faculty.

"We are thrilled to work with our partners at Broward College to host the installation of ‘This Is a Canvas’ in downtown Fort Lauderdale,” said FAU Associate Provost Anthony Abbate. "We remain committed to improving the quality of the urban experience downtown.”
