Broward College Adds STEM-Focus to Summer Camp Lineup

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL (April 20, 2015) – For the first time, Broward College will introduce STEM-focused summer camps to hundreds of local kids and teens. Camp attendees will learn through hands-on participation in the highly rewarding fields of science, technology, engineering and math, exploring and building new skills, such as coding, programming, web design, mobile app development, video game design, animation, robotics and more. The camps — part of the College’s annual slate of offerings — are available throughout June, July and August at the College’s campuses and centers.

Youth with an interest in science can learn about weather patterns and processes, earth science, energy and chemistry through hands-on experiments as a part of CSI: Cool Science Investigations. For those more fascinated by space, Broward College’s Buehler Planetarium will host Space Camp, which includes planetarium shows and the chance to build and launch handmade rockets. In addition, Broward College’s Aviation Institute has partnered with Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University to create a camp focused on aviation that will include airport and air traffic control tower tours, as well as activities and team building exercises with Broward College’s aviation maintenance, operations and pilot faculty. 

For those interested in coding, there will be several classes at the Summer Coding Institute which will expose teens to coding and web design, while also featuring special guest lectures by successful women in technology careers. Similarly, Broward College’s Robotics Camp will focus on building and using code to program robots. This camp will end in a competition with winners receiving a LEGO programmable robot. Other technology-based offerings include App Attack, Make Your First Video Game and Minecraft Designers. 

As a part of Broward College’s “Pathways to Fun and Learning,” these camps are designed to provide a safe environment for learning without the pressure of a typical classroom environment. In addition to the STEM-focused camps, there will also be art, business, education and sports or recreation camps.
