Broward College Offers Five Tips for Women’s Health Month

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL (May 13, 2015) – Women take on many roles – spouses, mothers, daughters, grandmothers, employees, employers, mentors and friends, to name a few. During National Women’s Health Month, observed in May, Broward College’s Employee Wellness Manager Brenda Bordogna is offering five tips for women to stay happy, healthy and strong in all their roles.

Make time for yourself. There is a saying, “you can’t give what you don’t have,” and that can be applied to time, care, enthusiasm or energy. It is important to take part in activities that are enjoyable every day, whether that is reading a book, exercising, going to a movie or even taking a bath. This time is crucial in allowing you to have the energy, patience and tolerance to handle whatever situation arises.

Find a support system. Having support from healthy relationships is vital to wellbeing. Friendships, romantic relationships or family relationships that cause continued stress, anxiety and other unwelcomed feelings on a continual basis can leave women drained, and can undermine goals and self-worth. To better cope when problems arise, find a positive support system, with people who will allow you to focus on being positive and help you to work towards solutions to problems.

Make gratitude your attitude. It is important to remain positive by practicing gratitude and appreciating the small moments and experiences in life. This will give your mind less time to dwell on complaints or to get bogged down by problems. Making gratitude a habit is as easy as saying thank you for even the smallest or most routine things in life.

Make smart food choices by checking labels. Eat foods lower in fat, higher in fiber, and lower in sodium and sugar to maintain good health. An easy way to remember what to look for in your foods is the rule of 3. Review the food label and try to pick foods that are 3 grams or less in fat, 3 grams or more in fiber and 3 grams or less in sugar, or as close as possible. This is a good rule of thumb when choosing prepackaged foods. Sodium should be limited to 2,300 mg per day for adults without other health risks.

Know your resources. It is crucial to learn what help is available to make life easier. Seek out assistance from friends and acquaintances in finding a pet or child sitter. Learn what local resources are available at community centers, schools and in online communities so that planning personal time isn’t another stressor.
