Broward College to Host World Refugee Commemoration on June 19

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL (June 4, 2015) – To honor the cultural contributions of local refugees who were forced to flee their homes under threat of persecution, conflict or violence, Broward College is hosting a World Refugee Day event. This event will be held on Friday, June 19, from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Broward College’s Omni Auditorium, North Campus, 1000 Coconut Creek Blvd., Coconut Creek.
The event, organized by the Broward and Palm Beach County Refugee Task Force, will begin with a private naturalization ceremony by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services to celebrate the citizenship of 200 participants. An award ceremony honoring several of South Florida’s refugees will follow.
A family fun fair, which is free and open to the public, featuring live performances, music, arts and crafts, food, raffles and games, as well as activities for children will be part of the day’s events. A variety of organizations will also be on-hand, showcasing the services they provide to South Florida families.
World Refugee Day is a global event launched by the United Nations in 2001 to recognize the challenges faced by approximately 42.5 million refugees. It provides an opportunity to not only raise awareness of the challenges many refugees face, but also to honor their courage, strength and determination.
