Broward College Announces 2015-2016 Visiting Artist Series

Three new series to offer twenty-four shows from September 2016 through March, 2017

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL (August 20, 2015) – Broward College recently announced its 2015-2016 Visiting Artist series, “Visual Scholars,” scheduled to launch in September at the College’s North Campus. For the first time, this year’s series will feature artists that incorporate the educational disciplines of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) into their artistic process. Both the lectures and workshops are free and open to the public.

“This year we wanted to expand the series by implementing the concept that art extends across several disciplines,” said Lisa Rockford, assistant professor of fine arts and creator of the Visiting Artists Series. “Each academic field will be an essential component in the artists’ bodies of work and will certainly transcend traditional ideas of what it means to be an artist in the 21st century.

The 2015 – 2016 Visiting Artist series includes the following events: 

Visiting Artist Lecture: Marissa Lee Benedict
Thursday, Sept. 24, 7 p.m.

Sculptor and scientific researcher Marissa Lee Benedict will discuss her multidisciplinary and environmentally based work as a sculptor, researcher, writer and teacher. Benedict’s sculptures utilize and explore everything from algae to geological core samples.

Visiting Artist Lecture: Christopher Baker

Christopher Backer, professor of art and technology at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, discusses his transition from scientist to artist and how his interactive installations reflect the complex relationship between society and its technologies.

Visiting Artist Lecture: Brian Dettmer

Sculptor Brian Dettmer discusses his innovative and ornate sculptures created from cutting, carving and forming repurposed books and antiquated media. His work has been exhibited and published internationally and featured in The New York Times, Wired and Esquire.

Visiting Artist Lecture: Marissa Schlesinger

Marissa Schlesinger, art historian, Egyptologist and director of academic affairs at Kinsborough Community College, shares examples of how science, technology, engineering and mathematics were used in ancient Egypt. Schlesinger is a frequent lecturer at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

John Edmark, professor of design at Stanford University, discusses his mathematically precise inventions and kinetic zoetrope sculptures, creating objects that transform with movement and using the Fibonacci sequence as a basis for creation.

California-based artist and illustrator Adonna Khare discusses her large-scale graphite drawings of the natural world, which are whimsical, illustrative celebrations of the animal kingdom. Khare’s intricate works have been featured in the Huffington Post, Juxtapoz Magazine and NPR.
