Meeting the needs of students, Broward College introduces 14 new programs

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL (September 1, 2015) – Broward College welcomed its students, representing 149 different countries, to its campuses and centers for the start of the 2015-16 academic year. More than 3,000 new students registered for classes, an increase of 43 percent compared to last fall. To date, Broward College also has 639 international students, the largest number on record. To support this thriving and vibrant student community, Broward College continues to provide access to quality, affordable education that leads directly to career opportunities in high-demand workforce areas.

“We look forward to another outstanding and successful academic year at Broward College as we continue in our mission to support our strong, dynamic community,” said Broward College President J. David Armstrong, Jr. “By working closely with local businesses in a wide-variety of industries, we are able to target workforce needs, and offer our students 140 different degree and certificate programs that respond directly to the needs of the community.”

This fall, Broward College unveiled 14 new associate degree and certification programs, including business analytics, aviation administration and medical lab technology. In addition, two new online associate degree programs in computer and network security – cybersecurity and technology project management - are being offered by Broward College Online, the College’s virtual campus which offers some of the most affordable degrees in South Florida.

The new, accelerated weekend Supply Chain Management Express program also begins this fall. It is designed for busy working adults interested in pursuing a Bachelor of Applied Science in Supply Chain Management degree. Classes are scheduled year-round — during the fall, spring and summer semesters — on Friday nights, as well as Saturday mornings and afternoons. Students will first graduate with an Associate of Science in Supply Chain Management Operations in December 2016 and then with a Bachelor of Applied Science in Supply Chain Management in December 2017.

In September, the new Academic and Laboratory Science Building will open on Broward College’s Judson A. Samuels South Campus. The two-story, 51,336 square foot building includes 13 labs and 10 classrooms and will expand the College’s capacity to support STEM education and enrich the undergraduate student research experience. It is the newest building on the South Campus in 10 years.

This fall semester, Broward College is a tobacco-free and smoke-free campus. To ease the transition, onsite tobacco cessation programs are being offered through a partnership with Nova Southeastern University’s Area Health Education Centers program, which trains and uses Broward College’s RN-BSN nursing students as smoking cessation facilitators.
