Broward College to Host Discussion on Cuba for First Village Square Forum of the Season

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL (September 16, 2015) –  The American flag being raised above the U.S. Embassy in Cuba for the first time in 54 years signaled the restoration of diplomatic relations between the two countries and drew a strong response from many within South Florida. To provide an opportunity for community and civic engagement on this important topic, Broward College, in partnership with the Village Square, is bringing together several community leaders for the first “Dinner at the Square” event of the second season. “South Florida on Cuba: We Can Cross the Strait but Can We Bridge the Gap of Distrust?” will be held Wednesday, Oct. 14, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Tower Club, 100 SE 3rd Ave., One Financial Plaza, Regions Bank Bldg., 28th Floor, Fort Lauderdale. Registration starts at $35, then goes to $45 on Friday, Oct. 9.

“We are excited to be able to partner with Village Square for another year and create this type of platform for civic engagement in Broward County, allowing the community to come together to examine key political issues facing our state and country,” said Broward College President J. David Armstrong, Jr. “With the renewed diplomatic relations between the United States and Cuba, now is the perfect time to discuss a topic that greatly affects so many in South Florida.”

Speakers for the event include Thomas Wenski, Archbishop of Miami, Roman Catholic Church; Michael Putney, senior political television reporter and columnist, and Marili Cancio, attorney at Cancio Johnson Attorneys at Law.

The Village Square is a non-partisan public educational forum, founded in 2006 when Allan Katz, former-Tallahassee city commissioner, and his friend Bill Law, president of Tallahassee Community College, were on opposing sides of a divisive local issue. In their disagreement, they decided to create a shared civic space for conversations for people with different viewpoints to discuss matters of local, state and national importance.

All events are planned by the advisory board members, a group of community leaders, including city and county commissioners, educators, business owners, and religion and non-profit leaders from across Broward County, representing all political affiliations.
